The Gotthard Tunnel was closed in both directions Monday afternoon after a road accident involving three vehicles. Five people were injured.
Shortly after 13:45, a car registered in the Netherlands and driving north crossed the double safety line and hit a motorhome – also bearing Dutch plates – coming in the opposite direction, said the cantonal police uranaise. The car then collided with a van registered in the canton of Zurich.
The accident occurred 1.5 kilometers from the northern exit of Göschenen (UR). Five people were injured, some slightly and others more seriously. They were transported to the hospital by Rega.
The tunnel should remain closed until 18h, time to perform relief, evacuation and rehabilitation. The amount of damage is not known. An investigation has been opened.
